How to Choose Your Ideal Dog Waste Composter!

Choosing a dog waste composter is a big decision – there is very little room for error when you’re dealing with poop. Seriously, you really don’t want to deal with a mess that results from buying the wrong piece of composting equipment.

Know your options, call a few customer support numbers if you have to, and thoroughly equip yourself with the knowledge to make a smart purchase that will keep your yard clean and your life green for years to come!

1. Worm Farm / Vermicomposter

A worm farm is a great science-fair experiment, but this fascinating contraption makes an even better dog waste composter. Worms are happy to feed exclusively on dog poop. A vermicomposter usually comes in two parts: a top container for the worms and waste, and a bottom container for the valuable liquid fertilizer that accumulates from the composting dog waste above. Harvest compost from the top container upon completion.

2. Leach Bed Composter Unit

Leach systems are sometimes called “septic tank style” dog waste composting systems. Simply bury the unit, feed dog waste through a lidded top, add composting mix every month, and water regularly. Although you cannot harvest any solid compost, this in ground dog waste composter will not harm your lawn and keeps flies and animals away from the dog waste. These do not work in clay soil, unfortunately.

3. Sewer Line Attachment

Not technically a dog waste composter, but this is a very green disposal option nonetheless. You use less water than with traditional composting since you’re simply utilizing the wastewater that’s already flowing. These hook into your septic/sewer clean-out, allowing you to drop feces in through a lidded “tube”. Quick, easy, and green.

4. Dedicated Dog Waste Compost Bin

You can also build your own compost bin similar to the ones gardeners use for yard and kitchen waste. However, this technique is NOT for novices. When done incorrectly, a DIY dog waste composter can produce toxic runoff and breed diseases detrimental to the health of nearby humans and animals. However, if you already know your way around a compost bin, this can be a great way to produce some great product!

Every single dog waste composter has one thing in common: the compost should never be used on or near food-producing plants.

Dog poop compost still works great on lawns, flowers, and ornamentals but it should never come in contact with anything intended for consumption. Learning how to use a dog waste composter takes time and dedication, but in the end, cheap green waste disposal is always worth it!

Bloody compost bins! Giving up the fight against fruit flies in the kitchen. They can stay on as pets. I already have a favourite.
